Meeting Minutes
On Thursday evening, March 29th, 2001, the Cherokee County Historical Society convened at the administrative office in the Historic Cherokee County Courthouse to discuss the business of the Society, as detailed on distributed agenda. In attendance were: Jean Krueger, Judson Roberts, Rebecca Ray, Doug Flint, Skip Spears, Sylvia Rankin. Not attending was: Elaine Hubbard.
Minutes from the meeting of January 28, 2001 were distributed and discussed. Motion to approve as submitted was made by Judson Roberts and seconded by Rebecca Ray. They were approved by an affirmative vote of the Board.
Treasurer's Report:
Balance Sheet dated March 19, 2001 submitted by Treasurer Jean Krueger, attached to and made a part of these minutes.
Old Business:
New Business
- April Banquet
Work is in progress for the annual banquet. Speaker has been secured (Judge Marion T. Pope, Jr.) and invitation have been mailed. Scott Evans will be asked to do an audio/video presentation in conjunction with Historic Preservation Awards presentations.
- Progress on the Rock Barn
Judson Roberts reported that construction has finally commenced. The Architect and the Construction Administrator have been advised that the Crescent Farm Historical Center is to be advertised as a tour venue for the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce's 'Discover Cherokee' event on May 19-20, 2001. The Board expects that construction and punchlist will be complete before that date.
- June Meeting:
[This agenda item was revised to include a discussion of all meetings on the 2001 calendar.] It was confirmed that the Board will be meeting on the 2nd Thursday of alternate months. Those Board meetings will occur on May 10, September 13, and November 8. No Board meeting will be held in July. Society meetings, traditionally held on the 3rd Tuesday of certain months, will be as follows with program (or proposed programs) noted: June 19/At the Funk Heritage Center in Waleska, August 21/At the Rock Barn (program to be announced), October 16/At the Rock Barn (suggested program by the Genealogy Committee), and the December Christmas Party date to be announced later.
- Historic Preservation Award nominations:
After discussion of the Historic Sites Committee recommendations, it was proposed that the commercial award be made to Canton Mill Lofts and the residential award be made to Brown Farm.
Motion made to approve: Judson Roberts
Motion seconded: Sylvia Rankin
The motion was approved by an affirmative vote of the Board.
- Committee Reports:
Committee reports were solicited by email, printed for review, and compilation by Sylvia Rankin dated March 29, 2001 is attached to and made a part of these minutes.
- Volunteer Listing:
Skip Spears has suggested that Tom Krueger develop a list of volunteers (from email membership applications that he is collecting) to distribute to committee chairs.
- Canton Livable Centers Initiative:
Plans for this Initiative were presented informally by Doug Flint. It was generally discussed that the Board would keep a watchful eye on this project.
- Other New Business Discussion Items:
--Pat Kearns is developing a listing of history teachers in Cherokee County which may be of some use to the Society in terms of collecting and disseminating information about historic preservation issues and education.
--Peggy Corbitt, local history teacher, was recognized as one who is encouraging pro-active student involvement in historic preservation issues and projects.
--The Society inventory of "Glimpses" is depleted. Bernese Cagle secured reprint prices of 500 books at $8.02 each. No specific direction was made by the Board as to re-ordering the books at this time.
