Sites Worth Saving in Cherokee County - Endangered Sites List

The Cherokee County Historical Society is now accepting nominations for the first Endangered Sites List. CCHS needs assistance from the community to help identify threatened historic resources in our area. This endangered list is designed to call attention to important historic sites that are threatened by demolition, neglect, lack of maintenance, or inappropriate development, and to offer assistance to the owner. CCHS' new program is modeled after ones sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, The Georgia Trust and other preservation organizations. Cherokee County's threatened sites may include significant historic sites including buildings, cemeteries, structures, districts, archaeological sites and cultural landscapes. CCHS invites the public to submit sites that should be included on the list at www.rockbarn.org/endangered.php a form with several easy questions will be available to be filled out and submitted. The deadline is June 30, 2009. Suggestions can also be made over the phone by calling 770.345.3288.

CCHS, through the list, hopes to encourage community dialogue about these important historic resources. CCHS will also offer assistance to the chosen site owners with proven preservation tools and partnerships to help stabilize or rehabilitate the properties. Designation on this list will not restrict or limit the properties in any way. The main goal of this program is to identify historic sites in the area that are endangered, and by recognizing these sites, create community involvement and assist the owner in stabilizing or preserving the site. The 3 to 5 chosen Sites will be revealed in 2009 as Cherokee County's Sites Worth Saving.
