Sites Worth Saving
The Historical Society greatly appreciates your support. However, we request that the public respect the owners' privacy by not revealing any personal information on this website, by visiting the sites, or by contacting the owners. These sites were nominated by the public and not by the owners themselves. As far as we know, none of these properties are currently for sale.
Etowah Elementary School
This was the first school built in the state (circa 1934-35) with laborers paid by the Works Progress Administration. This school for grades 1 - 9 was a consolidation of the older Creighton and Oakland Schools of the Creighton-Hightower Community. The land was donated by local citizens. It's architecture, including the gabled pavilion with belfry and arched, recessed entries, is very similar to the former Union Hill School (Community Center). The current threat to the building is neglect, and because it is not easily accessible, it is unclear whether the building is currently occupied. Possible solutions include working with the owner to make necessary repairs and maintenance. If the owner is interested in selling the property, help find a preservation-minded buyer.

This building has so much character. I am sure that it could be put to good use in a new and innovative way. In times like these this would make an excellent place to bring a community together.

This site has such unique and interesting features.Perhaps some of the other structures could be grouped together at one site for a historical type village.

What beautiful architecture. It would be a shame to let this building fall down due to neglect.

I think its a beautiful building with a lot of potential. Also, with it being a school, a lot of people in the community may have a personal "connection" with it through relatives of theirs that attended the school.

My Father coordinated and edited the book "Lumpkin County, Georgia
Schools of Yesteryear: an historical overview of the rural one-room schools 1840's-1957,so the interest in preservation of old schoolhouses runs in our family.

It is a fabulous historical treasure. I would like to buy it myself. This should be the second most important property to save after the Elementary School.

Not only should this structure be preserved because of local historical significance but because of national historical significance.

On a recent Sunday afternoon drive, I was struck by the lack of historic buildings, homes and schools left in the Cherokee area - in the metro Atlanta area as well.
Our state and county is replete with history, yet we choose to destroy it in the name of progress. We take no pride in our community or history....
This old, neglected building is deserving of preservation.

Because I believe it would be an important part of our history to keep so that others may see what is was like many years ago.

It is worth saving for future generations to visit and see a school from the "olden days." How comforting it is to see this school nestled in the trees. I can almost hear the bell ringing and children running to the school.

The architectural style and being constructed by WPA increase the value of this structure. It had architectural elements not common in one room or community schools.

It doesn't need renovated. It needs restoration and upkeep. It needs to be used. Nothing kills a building faster than taking the life out of it. It breaths as the people inside breath. Renovations is what destroys so much history and character. Stop making things new and improved and let's respect what we have.
